Catalytic Thinking - Designing Governance Structures for the Future

  • Nelson Tasman Hospice 331 Suffolk Road Nelson, Nelson Region, 7011 New Zealand (map)

Across Aotearoa, community organisations are facing the same governance challenges — heavy compliance loads, limited capacity, and boards stretched thin. What if we could do governance differently? What if leadership could be shared, collaborative, and grounded in relationships rather than structures?

In this 4-hour, in-person workshop, futurist Hildy Gottlieb (co-founder of Creating the Future and developer of Catalytic Thinking) and facilitator May Miller-Dawkins invite you to explore what’s possible when we approach governance through a catalytic lens — one focused on connection, curiosity, and collective strength.

Together we’ll unpack the constraints and assumptions shaping current governance models, and experiment with alternative approaches like shared boards, joint roles, and collaborative decision-making. Expect rich discussion, peer learning, and ideas you can take back to your own organisation, and ideas that the Te Tauihu Community Development Agency might support For-purpose organisations to build together.

Whether you’re a board member, community leader, funder, or For-purpose organisation leader, this is a chance to think boldly about how governance can enable, not exhaust, the work of community.
